Faces of CGTN: Seeing a different point

My name is Liu Xin, the host of The Point. 

It's the first ever opinion show on China's international TV and was born as part of the launch of CGTN on the first day of 2017. 

For six years, I worked as the Geneva Bureau Chief for CCTV, China's national broadcaster. Before that, I was a news presenter for over a decade for CCTV News, the predecessor of CGTN.  

Joining CGTN was like a home-coming for me.

But it was a tough decision. For various reasons, I couldn't relocate my entire family but thanks to the internet, we can stay connected.

Looking back, I do not regret making the choice. China is moving towards the center of the global stage and the world needs to hear China's voice and perspectives. 

CGTN is an excellent platform for this. With the freedom and support I have received, our team has been a pioneer in the past year. From scratch, we have built a credible program with influence at home and abroad. It’s like a child for me.

It has not been an easy journey, though.

The Point is an opinion show, featuring interviews conducted in my style and comments made from my perspective. For my opinions to carry weight, the challenge is to find facts.

Opinion is like a tower built with bricks of facts. If the bricks are solid, the tower stands strong.

Between CGTN and the mainstream Western media, besides the apparent ideological difference, our perspective is also different. 

As China belongs to one of the “others”, we don’t judge from a higher ground, but observe objectively and look for common ground and constructive solutions.

Hence the logo of our show: a cone. From the top, you see a circle; from the sides, you see something different.

I have faced criticism. Some viewers say I’m pro-China and anti-West. 

I ask myself: Is my opinion based on facts to the best possible extent? If yes, I have confidence in my opinion.

CGTN is where China’s rise is documented and explained, and also challenged and debated. I would like to play a part in that process.
