Business leaders from South Korea, China and Japan would be meeting on the sidelines of the planned trilateral summit of the three states to forge greater cooperation at a time of rising geopolitical tensions and particularly strained relations among the neighboring countries. Sohn Kyung-shik, CJ Group chairman and head of Korea Enterprises Foundation; Park Yong-maan, Doosan Group chairman and chair of Korea Chamber of Commerce; and Yoon Boo-keun, president and chief executive of Samsung Electronics’ consumer electronics unit, would be some of the major corporate chiefs to attend the two-day summit from Dec. 24, according to industry sources on Thursday.

Other high-profile names include Hyundai Motor Group President Kong Young-woon, SK Innovation CEO Kim Jun and LG Chem’s battery chief Kim Jong-hyun.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in is scheduled to hold a three-way summit with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in China’s southwestern city of Chengdu. He is expected to hold separate talks with Abe and Chinese President Xi Jinping during the trip.

Moon would consult with Xi on North Korea’s latest weapons tests and its return to belligerence ahead of the year-end deadline it has set for the United States for progress in the stalled nuclear talks. He would also work to mend frayed ties with Beijing over the deployment of a U.S.-backed anti-missile shield on Korean soil. All eyes would be on whether the summit would also set the stage for Korea and Japan to repair their sharply strained ties. The long-fraught relations between the two countries have sunk to a new low after Tokyo in July imposed trade curbs of materials underpinning Seoul’s bedrock industries amid a diplomatic dispute over wartime compensation.

Korea threatened to scrap its intelligence-sharing deal with Japan in a tit-for-tat move but made a last-minute decision last month to keep the pact under U.S. pressure. Sales of Japanese beer, clothes and cars have plummeted in South Korea amid a broad consumer boycott. Travels to Japan, once the most popular destination among Koreans, have also more than halved, devastating Japan’s tourism industry and airlines of both countries.
