Iowans who want to ring in 2019 with some fireworks, literally, will be restricted depending on the city in which they live in.
Below is a list of the cities and their fireworks ordinances regarding when you can and cannot shoot them off throughout the year.
State law allows people in Iowa to use fireworks on private property from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.聽June 1 through July 8 and again from December 10 through January 3. But dozens of cities and local governments have restricted fireworks use since the law went into effect.
Ankeny residents cannot shoot off fireworks on New Year鈥檚 Eve or New Year鈥檚 Day. The only day fireworks use is allowed in Ankeny is July 4 from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. You can read the full ordinance here.聽
Des Moines, Clive, Urbandale, Bondurant, Johnston, Altoona, and West Des Moines have all banned the use of fireworks any time in the year, including New Year鈥檚 Eve. Many of the cities in the list, including Des Moines and West Des Moines, initially allowed residents to use fireworks on July 4, but after numerous complaints from businesses and residents about the noise, the smell, and the overall use of fireworks, those city聽councils reversed their decisions and banned all use of fireworks.
The city of Norwalk does allow residents to use fireworks on New Year鈥檚 Eve, per the city鈥檚 ordinance.聽You can set off fireworks starting at 9 a.m. on December 31 and until 12:30 a.m. on January 1.
